Windows Installation

This section documents the typical Windows installation process for Omniscope, and discusses options for rolling-out and upgrading Omniscope in various organisational and network/desktop administration contexts.

Note: Omniscope is a Java application that runs on any operating system that supports a Java virtual machine, including Mac OS and Linux. The activation process to upgrade free Viewers to authoring Professional , DataManager and Enterprise Editions IS supported on Mac OX but not yet supported on other operating systems like Linux/Unix.

For Windows users there are three different installers to choose from which are listed below. Please note that if you do not have Java on your machine then you will need to chose the full installer, which includes a full version of Java to run Omniscope.

  • Omniscope Light installer: normal installer file which does not include a bundled Java virtual machine. 
  • Omniscope 32 bit full (offline) installer: installer bundled with the 32 bit private Java virtual machine (PVM).
  • Omniscope 64 bit full (offline) installer: installer bundled with the 64 bit private Java virtual machine (PVM). 
Minimum requirements
The minimum system requirements for running Omniscope are outlined here

Dependencies

Omniscope has no dependency on any other software or program, other than Java Virtual Machine which is bundled with full offline installers.

Single user installation

Single user typical  Windows install sequences (32 & 64 bit):

Windows XP 

Omniscope is compatible with both 32 and 64 bit versions XP. Activation is on per account basis, please do not activate from admin install account. 

Windows Vista  

Omniscope is compatible with both 32 bit and 64 bit version of Vista. Activation is on per account basis, please do not activate from admin install account.

Windows 7 

Omniscope is compatible with both 32 bit and 64 bit versions of Windows 7. However, XP Mode of Windows 7 is not supported. Activation is on per account basis, please do not activate from the admin install account.  

 

Virtualisation 

Omniscope hasn't yet been tested with virtualisation software such as Microsoft AppV, or any other similar programs.

Multi-user install options:

The sub-sections below cover network roll-out installs and options for centralised deployment and corporate customisation, including any known issues and workarounds:

Note: All free Viewer downloads come with a free 30-day trial of a full Professional. From version 2.5, the free trial offer/count-down screen is not displayed to users clicking on IOK files attached to e-mails and download links, only to users trying to open files which cannot be opened by the free Viewer. Free Viewer keys that suppress all trial offers can be used in corporate deployments.
