Installing Omniscope on computers not running Windows

This section deals with issues relating to installation on operating systems other than Microsoft Windows. Omniscope will run on any operating system that supports a Java virtual machine, which is almost all, although some mobile systems use cut-down versions of Java.

There are important differences in installation and functionality depending on the operating system

32 bit vs 64 bit on the Mac

Both 32 and 64 bit operation is supported by the Mac installer. On Mac, Omniscope uses the version of Java installed on the machine (rather than its own private version as it usually does on PCs).

If your Mac has 64-bit Java, Omniscope may or may not operate in 64-bit depending on the version of OS X you have.  If you need Omniscope to operate in 64-bit mode, please get in touch on the forums.  Omniscope 2.6 will not have this problem and will automatically use 64-bit Java if available, falling back to 32-bit.

Memory allocation on the Mac

Unlike with the Windows version of Omniscope, the Mac version cannot automatically allocate the correct amount of memory.  To customise the memory allocation for Omniscope on Mac, right-click the Visokio Omniscope application and choose "Show package contents".  Browse to the "Info.plist" file and open in Text Edit.  Find the text "-Xmx800m" near the end of the file, and change to e.g. "-Xmx1800m" for an 1800MB limit.  We recommend setting this to be approximately 75% of the amount of physical memory in your Mac.  Save the file and test by launching the application - if the application does not launch, restore it by reinstalling, then get in touch on the forums for further help.
